1st Grade Information
RED Homework Folders -
Red Homework folders will be coming home in your child’s backpack on Monday of each week. Please check these on a daily basis for homework assignments, notes from teachers, and other information. These folders should be returned on Friday. Spelling Pictionary homework and the Reading Log are due on Friday, but Math homework is due the next day it is assigned.
YELLOW Thursday Folders -
Every Thursday review your child’s school papers and important notices that come home. These folders should be returned empty on Friday.
Family Journals -
Your child will be writing you letters in his/her Family Journal. Please take a moment to read their letter to you and respond with a letter back in the same journal. It will be a priceless log of your child’s thoughts about their 1st grade experience and you’ll be amazed at their growth over the year.
Recess -
We will be going outside on all weather permitting days, so please send jackets, coats, etc. when appropriate and remember to label everything, including lunch boxes. Our afternoon recess is a good time for a snack if your child needs it. Please send a nutritional snack.
Spelling -
Look for spelling homework for the week to come home in the Monday homework folder. The concept is outlined and each day’s homework is also included in the concept newsletter. Children will take spelling tests every week from lists that concentrate on a spelling concept as well as high frequency words. These lists are not meant to be difficult, but rather to teach a specific concept. About once a month the children will also take a spelling test on the high frequency words we concentrate on each trimester in addition to each previous trimester’s words.
Spelling Pictionary - Please double check your child is writing their sentence with a capital letter and ending with the correct punctuation. The spelling word should be highlighted or circled within the sentence. There should also be an illustration to match each sentence.
Reading -
Set aside at least 15 minutes each day for reading with your child. As the year progresses, your child should be doing more of the reading while you listen and enjoy their progress. Use some of this time to talk about what you are reading so you can monitor your child’s understanding of the material. A weekly reading log is expected from each 1st grader with a quarterly party planned for kids who turn them in.
Math -
Make math important in your child’s daily life by having them read numbers, count by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s and by practicing basic addition and subtraction math facts. Money and time are concepts that will be important to your 1st grader as well.
Birthdays -
Unless you are inviting ALL of the children in class to your party, please do not send invitations to distribute at school. If you choose to bring in a treat for your child’s birthday, limit the treat to an individual serving per child like a donut, cookie or cupcake. (Remember no nuts, or tree nut products) If you bring a drink, it must be a clear liquid.
